Local Beaches – Dog Friendly All Year Round

Our local coastline is spoilt for beautiful beaches. Here are just some of my favourite local spots. For information on beaches across the whole of Cornwall, see Cornwall Beaches

Par Sands Beach 1.1 miles – A beautiful long, sandy beach with drifting dunes. Free car park next to play area / cafe , otherwise there are charges Mar 31st – October 31st. Dog Friendly all year round.

Spit Beach 1.5 miles Stunning long beach with soft sands a, rock pools and caves. The long industrial path to the beach belies its splendour. The permanently free car park for Spit is just past Par Harbour. Head under the train bridge and turn right. Follow the path over a bridge, through the clay works and down to the shore. Dog Friendly all year round. N.B. Officially, dogs are only allowed in summer. When the council erects a sign every few years, it disappears instantly as locals take their dogs 365 days a year. Beautiful!

Fowey – Readymoney Cove – 4.5 miles – A sheltered, sandy beach to the south of Fowey Town. Dogs are permitted all year round except during 10am – 6pm in July and August.

Coombe Hawne Beach – 3.6 miles – is the place to go if you want a beach to yourself, sometimes, even in summer. Park in the national trust car park (free) and head down the adjacent path. Turn right down to the beach (10-15mins) and you can enjoy peace and tranquility. Dog Friendly all year round.

Polridmouth Cove/ The Gribben Lighthouse / Menabilly. A truly heavenly place to spend the afternoon. You park at the Farm Car Park and put 50p in the milk churn and walk down to the shore, so you need to be fit for this one. Once there, Menabilly beach is sandy and safe with the sea level quite shallow for 100m or so, which is great for bathing and children. If you turn up right, you can walk to the Gribben Lighthouse for splendid views or if you follow the path left, you will find Polridmouth cove, featured in Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Really peaceful, no shops, no noise, just old Cornwall. Dog friendly all year round

Caerhays Beach – 14 miles is a huge sandy beach with the beautiful backdrop of the Caerhays Estate. The beach is dog friendly all year round but the owners request that they are kept on leads in summer.

Local Beaches that allow dogs out of season

Charlestown – 3.5 miles – Gorgeous historic Georgian Port where many Hollywood blockbusters have been filmed. There are several high quality pubs and restaurants for gourmet diners to enjoy. It boasts a Shipwreck Treasure Centre that is also worth a visit. The harbour (dog friendly) is lined with pebble beaches on either side, which are dog friendly, out of season. Dogs are allowed before 8am and after 6pm in summer.

Polkerris Beach – 2.3 miles – Sandy beach along beautiful historic harbour with a handful of shops and a Watersports centre with equipment hire. The Rashleigh Pub is excellent. Dogs allowed all year round in pub, even wet and sandy but only on beach 1st Oct- Good Friday

Carlyon Bay 3 – miles – This was the best beach in the area when I was young. Due to planning disputes, it only has transient summer activities now. Lovely long beach. Dogs allowed out of season. no dogs 31st October – Good Friday

Porthpean Beach – 5.4 miles –has its own sailing club with a long beach with rock pools and Watersports in summer. Dogs not allowed 1st July-31st August.

Pentewan Sands – 8.8 miles – Nice long sandy beach with Watersports for hire. Out of season, you can eat, drink and swim (heated) at the Seahorse Entertainment centre in the caravan park. Dogs not allowed 1st Mar-1st November.
